The Geelong Hospital campus of St John of God is located at the outer fringes of the Geelong CBD in a city urban environment. Studio STH has worked extensively on the campus over the past 15 years, and has delivered Masterplan studies in 2010 and 2024.
The first Masterplan study in 2010 resulted in a major redevelopment in 2014, and a further redevelopment in 2017. The Masterplan informed the development of a major addition on the Myers street frontage and the establishment of the Granada Medical Centre on the corner of Myers and Moorabool Streets. These assets served to expand the clinical service capacity for the hospital and to provide a new identity for the campus. Services included a new Emergency department, additional Operating Theatres and associated surgical services support functions together with an uplift in over-night accommodation.
In 2024 Studio STH were again engaged by St John of God Healthcare to undertake a comprehensive Masterplan study of the campus for the purposes of developing a strategy to guide the long term transformation of the campus. Many of the campus assets were nearing the end of their serviceable life cycle and the campus , with no obvious pathway for further expansion.
Studio STH guided a series of structured workshops with key stakeholders that methodically examined the existing site, adjoining sites with a view to strategic acquisition, and existing asset condition and performance. This process identified a series of development options that would facilitate a staged development strategy to transform the hospital and deliver short, medium and long-term accommodation expansion scenarios.
